Enables Payments, Offers and Loyalty in a Single Contactless Transaction; Partnerships Support Mobile Commerce at Retailers, Vending Machines and Fuel Pumps

Isis®, the mobile commerce joint venture created by AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA Inc. and Verizon Wireless, today announced that leading payment terminal manufacturers and software providers are integrating Isis SmartTap™ capabilities across a comprehensive range of point-of-sale (POS) offerings, from high-end integrated POS terminals to vending and other unattended solutions. As Isis prepares for national availability later this year, today’s news signals support for SmartTap capabilities in a broad range of payment environments.

The Isis SmartTap protocol is a new, proprietary mobile commerce software specification that leverages near field communications (NFC) technology, a standard feature on most new smartphones. When supported in an NFC reader or payment terminal, the SmartTap protocol enables Isis Mobile Wallet™ users to pay, present loyalty cards and redeem offers in a single transaction.

“NFC is the international standard for mobile payments,” said Jim Stapleton, chief sales officer, Isis. “The proliferation of SmartTap capabilities at the point-of-sale takes mobile payments one step further, providing rich commerce features that offer an effortless consumer experience and drive engagement and loyalty in a way previously not possible. By providing Isis Ready™ solutions, POS, payment terminal and reader providers can deliver innovative technologies that will benefit merchants for years to come.”

Providers supporting SmartTap capabilities enable mobile commerce in a diverse range of environments such as mass transit, vending machines, fuel pumps, taxis, restaurants, grocery and retail stores.

New partners integrating SmartTap capabilities into product lines include:

  • ID TECH
  • On Track Innovations (OTI) Global
  • PAX Technology
  • Uniform Industrial Corporation (UIC)
  • XAC Automation Corporation

These technology providers join a growing list of partners that have already integrated SmartTap capabilities into POS offerings, including:

  • Equinox Payments
  • Gilbarco Veeder-Root
  • Ingenico
  • VeriFone
  • Wayne, A GE Energy Business

Mobilizing payments, loyalty and offers creates new merchant marketing opportunities, while streamlining the customer experience. A SmartTap-enabled POS terminal automatically recognizes and applies loyalty cards loaded in the Isis Mobile Wallet. Similarly, Isis Mobile Wallet users benefit from the ability to receive, store and present offers with SmartTap-enabled merchants.

“Roughly one-sixth of U.S. payment terminals are replaced each year. To fully benefit from mobile payments, this hardware replacement must be accompanied with a software infrastructure that enables the compelling shopping, selling and loyalty solutions that will drive changes in merchant and consumer behavior,” said Rick Oglesby, senior analyst, Aite Group. “This announcement demonstrates Isis’ resolve in bringing a fully functioning mobile commerce environment to market with their national rollout.”

New Co-Branded American Express Serve Account to Be Offered in Every Isis Mobile Wallet™

American Express and Isis® announced today that they will introduce American Express Serve to the Isis Mobile Wallet™. The new co-branded account will be offered in every Isis Mobile Wallet as a part of a nationwide launch later this year, enabling millions of Americans to tap and pay using their American Express Serve account.

By adding American Express Serve to the Wallet, customers will be able to pay bills online and send money to friends and family. They will also be able to add cash to their American Express Serve account or fund it using an existing bank account, any credit or debit card or through direct deposit.

“Linking the platforms will allow millions of people to conveniently and inexpensively manage and move their money,” said Dan Schulman, group president, Enterprise Growth, American Express. “From the palm of your hand, consumers including those without access to traditional bank accounts or credit can have access to everyday financial services. And our combined solution works in today’s retail environment, and in the emerging ‘tap to pay’ point of sale ecosystem.”

“Our relationship with American Express Serve underscores our mutual commitment to providing consumers with choice and value in mobile payments,” said Michael Abbott, chief executive officer, Isis. “We learned through our pilot that customers love the convenience of tap and pay with the ability to manage their payments and loyalty programs from one app. By adding American Express Serve to the Isis Wallet, we can immediately provide millions of consumers the opportunity to participate in mobile commerce as we continue to enrich the consumer experience.”

Customers will be able to use eligible American Express Serve accounts within the Isis Mobile Wallet to:

  • Load funds to their American Express Serve account from a variety of sources, including a bank account, debit, credit or charge card, or by receiving money from another American Express Serve account
  • Load cash to their American Express Serve account
  • Tap and pay with their phone at any NFC enabled retail location that accepts American Express
  • Use their American Express Serve Card at any merchant that accepts American Express Cards, both online and offline
  • Pay bills electronically
  • Make person to person (P2P) payments to other American Express Serve accountholders
  • Add funds using direct deposit

According to the FDIC, nearly 70 million Americans do not have bank accounts or access to credit. By adding alternatives to traditional banking services at a low cost to the Isis and American Express Serve experience, American Express Serve is now able to provide a unique service proposition to millions of Americans.

The Isis Mobile Wallet uses near field communications (NFC) technology to allow consumers to pay, redeem coupons and present loyalty cards with their mobile phones. American Express’ U.S. Consumer and OPEN® Small Business Cards are currently available in the Isis Mobile Wallet. Isis recently announced plans to expand nationwide later this year.

Millions of NFC-Enabled Devices Shipping Monthly; National Introduction to Follow Successful Pilots

NEW YORK CITY – July 30, 2013 – Isis®, the mobile commerce joint venture created by AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile US Inc. and Verizon Wireless, today announced plans to roll out the Isis Mobile Wallet™ nationwide later this year, following successful pilots in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah.

“Over the past nine months, we have proven the power of an open platform, creating an ecosystem of literally hundreds of partners dedicated to making mobile commerce a reality,” said Michael Abbott, chief executive officer, Isis. “As part of our commitment to consumers, we are incorporating feedback from our pilots into the next generation of the Isis Mobile Wallet as we prepare for national availability later this year.”

The Isis Mobile Wallet uses near field communication (NFC) technology to allow consumers to pay, redeem coupons and present loyalty cards with a tap of their smartphone. To use the Isis Mobile Wallet, consumers need an NFC-enabled smartphone and a SIM-based secure element, which together make the device Isis Ready®.

Nearly 20 million smartphones in market currently feature NFC technology, with millions more being shipped each month by three of the nation’s leading carriers – AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile US Inc. and Verizon Wireless. Thirty-five mobile devices across AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile US Inc. and Verizon Wireless currently support Isis and that number will continue to grow. Support for iPhone, Windows Phone and Blackberry 10 is expected to be introduced later this year.

“NFC technology is important to Samsung and is a standard feature in our flagship smartphones, including our Galaxy S® 4, as a powerful way for sharing through S Beam, and a tool for secure mobile payments with Isis,” said Kevin Packingham, chief product officer, Samsung Telecommunications America. “At Samsung, we are committed to providing our customers with the most innovative technologies available and the Isis Mobile Wallet is just one example of that commitment brought to life.”

Consumers that activate the Isis Mobile Wallet can pay at retail locations that accept contactless payments, the number of which has steadily grown over the past several years. Twenty-five of the top 100 national retailers have deployed or are deploying contactless terminals. Aite Group projects that 1.3 million locations in the U.S. will have contactless-ready payment terminals by year end, making it the most broadly deployed mobile payments technology at the point of sale.

“Working in partnership with Isis, we have been witness to the power of mobile payments and loyalty,” said Rick Kanemasu, vending technology strategy, Coca-Cola North America Group. “More than one-third of active Isis Mobile Wallets users in Austin have loaded a My Coke Rewards card into their Wallet since our pilot began and 90 percent of these are new to the My Coke Rewards program. Coca-Cola is engaging with new and existing customers as never before and we look forward to expanding nationwide with Isis later this year.”

“Jamba Juice harnessed the power of mobile commerce by introducing offers to the Isis Mobile Wallet in Austin and Salt Lake City,” said James White, chief executive officer, Jamba Juice. “Our offer program was successful in driving incremental foot traffic, increasing the frequency of consumer store visits and introducing Jamba Juice to first-time customers. We are now making plans to expand nationally with Isis so that all our franchisees can enjoy the benefits we have seen in our pilot markets.”

Isis will be incorporating key learnings from the successful pilot of the Isis Mobile Wallet in Austin and Salt Lake City into its planned national rollout later this year. Findings from the pilot launched in October 2012 show that:

  • On average, active Isis Mobile Wallet users tap more than 10 times per month
  • Two-thirds of active users opted in to receive offers and messages from their favorite brands, following an average of seven brands
  • Contactless acceptance nearly quadrupled to more than 4,000 locations in Austin and Salt Lake City
  • More than 80 percent of transactions take place at everyday spend locations such as quick-service restaurants, coffee shops, gas stations, convenience and grocery stores
  • Wallet users engaged in loyalty and offers tap up to two times more frequently than users who only make payments
